A group of concerned citizens has come together to create this website. Why? Because the School Board budget now occupies 54% – more than half – of the entire County Budget. $22.3 Million dollars will be spent by the School Board in fiscal year 2024 with virtually no oversight in spending or in policy decisions. Our mission? Support Northumberland County families, students, teachers, and taxpayers through transparency in school funding and school actions to enhance County fiscal strength and economic competitiveness.
The School Board budget has increased every year despite a decreasing number of students and, because the School Board Budget is so large, real estate tax increases loom over every property owner in the county. Renters, too, will be affected; landlords will necessarily pass those tax increases along to tenants. Business owners suffer, potential residents and businesses choose not to move into the county and current residents move to locations with more reasonable property taxes. In the future, our aging county might require full time paid Emergency Services which currently is beyond the county’s reach because so much of the budget is occupied by the School Board.
The increasing School Board budget trend affects so much more than just the school board and has long term ramifications for citizens and businesses in our county. The trend must stop.
How will we accomplish our Mission? We will translate data into user-friendly easily understood ‘bites’ to compile and track School Board progress toward more responsible stewardship of our tax dollars and better educational outcomes for our students.
This progress will not take place all at once, so check back often.
