13 Feb Change is in the air

The latest meeting of the Joint Finance Committee included recommendations to the Board of Supervisor representatives on addressing some findings from the recent forensic audit. You can view the full Joint Finance Committee meeting here.
The February 10, 2025 meeting of the Northumberland County School Board was filled with changes and surprises. A new acting clerk and deputy clerk of the board are now in place and the interim clerk is also acting as the interim finance director. New motions were made regarding the superintendent evaluation criteria, participation in the Joint Finance Committee and management of the agenda.

2:21 Closed session action items Vice Chair- student actions, credit acceptance, policy approval, personnel actions. Dr. Curran abstained from one motion.
5:20 – Dr. Curran introduces motions as follows:
a. Superintendent and at least one member of the Board attend the Joint Finance Committee Meeting with the Board of Supervisors. Motion failed.
Ayes – Dr. Davis and Dr. Curran
Nays – Mrs. O’Bier, Mrs. Christopher, and Ms. Mazyck.
b. School Board adopt the Board of Education performance standards and evaluation criteria for the Superintendent’s evaluation and the Board give guidance for fulfilling those standards to superintendent. Motion failed.

Nays – Mrs. O’Bier, Mrs. Christopher, and Ms. Mazyck.
c. Add approval of the agenda to the meeting agenda for each meeting so the Board can vote on the agenda for the meeting. Motion carried.

14:11 – Approval of the minutes – Dr. Curran identified numerous changes needed to the minutes and Board tabled approval of the minutes until next meeting.
17:33 – Presentation on changes to Virginia Department of Education school assessment criteria.
46:02 – Presentation and votes on required changes to School schedule to make up time from weather closings and next year’s school calendar.
50:34 – Public Comments
58:16 – Financial reports – check register for December needs replacement and vote, January check and EFT reports posted. Dr. Curran asks to have all payments include the associated line item for future reports.
1:02:08 – Budget update- budget still being worked, no updates, still collecting figures. Superintendent shares information on school board ‘asks’ prior to reviewing the budget again. Dr. Curran notes that board asked the Superintendent include expenses and budget for 23/24 line items and comparison to what is being asked in 25/26 budget.
1:04:00 – Superintendent’s report and Principal updates
1:18:00 – Board Member comments – Northern Neck Technical Center update, Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School update. Dr. Curran shares comments on his motions and school finances and Board responsibilities related to finances.
1:21:16 – Action items – facility use requests, grant award approval.
