Mrs. O’Bier’s snarky board comments never fail to amuse, and Monday night was no exception.  At the first board meeting of the new school year, the School Board Co-Chair made another thinly disguised attempt to discredit UHY’s Mr. Reagan first by asking how many employees had worked on the school finances (answer – 6) and then by claiming “six people and it’s still not fixed.” (begins @1:14:20 on the YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQrF9SB3Mdw )

What was seemingly meant to belittle Mr. Reagan and UHY had a different effect.  Six highly qualified finance professionals working for months on the schools finances and “it’s still not fixed.”  tells us that the schools’ books were as bad as we thought they were. 

Possibly worse.

Who hired the former superintendent Mrs. O’Bier, and who failed to adequately monitor how taxpayer money was being spent for years?  Who voted to approve check registers, expenditure reports and budgets without question for years? 

It wasn’t UHY, the six UHY employees who have worked to right the ship or Mr. Reagan.  If the same level of curiosity and rigorous discussion of school finances had been exhibited in past years, school finances might not require six professionals to unravel.

On the bright side, much needed finance discussion and transparency, board interest and video live streaming of the meeting are most welcome changes for which we should all be grateful.   Thank you for your participation – without citizen’s active engagement, these changes would never occur.
